Water is essential for human life, not only to drink, but also to play in. From jumping in a puddle, dive bombing into a pool, watching fish jump in a stream to kayaking through rapids. We love to make it splash. Splashing can be fun, annoying or even dangerous. What makes your splash? Maybe it is just dropping an ice cube in a tall glass of water.

I am Margaret Knepper, a retired software engineer. I escape the Florida summer heat to return to my home state of Wisconsin. I became interested in quilting during the American Bicentennial, but didn’t have time to quilt. Many years later I took a night time quilting class, not the star pupil. I quickly discovered I have a tendency not to follow patterns and instructions. I think Susan Carlson’s book really opened my eyes to quilt possibilities. I have had many quilts rejected for exhibitions, but a few accepted in area, regional, and global exhibits. During retirement I’ve tried to improve my drawing skills. Currently, my quilting focus is trying to tell a story with the quilt.
Thank you for the responses demonstrating all the different ways to make a splash. A new respect for the difficulty of the selection process facing judges. I now realize the importance of the detail shot and explanation of the idea.
There were many wonderful rivers, waterfalls, and wave quilts. As I expected, lots of animals and people interacting with the water. I wanted to show movement in the splash or due to the splash. In many cases, I tried to select a variety of ways to represent the splash or movement. But I couldn’t include all the different techniques and representations. I also tried to include some 3-D pieces.
