The mesmerizing effect of watching and listening to the waves wildly crash against the huge lava rocks at Laupahoehoe Point in Hawaii leads , paradoxically, to a sense of calm. I can sit there for hours. While my plein aire painters group captured the scene in oils or pastels, I "painted" it with bits of randomly cut fabric pieces. On the Pacific west coast huge waves crash against the rocks sending plumes of white spray into the air. Waves as far as one can see rise up, move forward and splash amongst themselves. Walking the beach near the pounding surf is an awe-inspiring experience.
