Bauhaus artist, Paul Klee once said, “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” One of the elements of design, line shows up in artworks in many different ways. How do you use lines in your work to express, create and connect? Lines can draw the viewer in and guide their eye across the art. Conveying emotion, ideas and physical shapes, they can be thick, thin, straight, curved or jagged. A line might be indicated with quilting, a piece of yarn, become a horizon or even be implied.
Diane Núñez is a suburban Detroit based fiber artist who creates unique quilts. Sewing began as a necessity since she is short and clothes are always too long. Her work combines her unique design perspective as a landscape architect with fiber using non-traditional materials in her work. She has won multiple awards, has work in public and private collections, and has been featured in leading art publications all over the world. As a critic says, “Núñez has found the place where her work is instantly recognizable, both as quilts and as art: in the sorority of fiber artists, who refuse to be constrained by anything.”
Four hundred and thirty-one works of art were submitted. WOW! Many of you have a strong affinity for the theme. Thank you all for responding. Your enthusiasm made my job much harder, in the best way. What a talented group of artists SAQA members are.
Lines are fundamental to our art. We all use them, through shapes, seams, surface details, fabric, stitching, and many more methods. Lines bring rhythm and movement to a piece. They serve as essential design elements. During the jurying process, I observed how differently, and at times similarly, artists use line work. Some works are fairly simple, others more complex. Lines can suggest structure, either architectural or literal. Some artists are more precise while others are deliberate or whimsical. Sometimes your chosen medium leads the way. I responded to repetitive patterns, though conceptual pieces drew me in.
Lines are used to count, guide our eyes through the work, and imply real or imagined landscapes. Even the shadows cast by sculptural works create lines of their own. I curated a cohesive show, creating a rhythm that allows your eye to move from one piece to the next, connected by either theme, shape, pattern or color.
As in my own work, I found myself drawn to geometric work, something I had in mind while writing the call and during the jurying process. I hope that when viewing the exhibit, you will be drawn in and discover new perspectives and experiences of what defines a line.
