Take an exploration below the surface. What do you see when you look beyond the obvious? In the physical world, what do we find when we go beneath the surface of the ocean, the earth, our skin, a plant or even a car hood? Conceptually, there might be more than meets the eye in a political message, a first impression, digital images (real or generated by AI), a song or poem. When we start scratching below the surface, we might find we need to look more closely and think more deeply about what we encounter to understand the complete picture.
After a career in graphic design, Karen Peters was drawn to textile art for the ability to combine multiple skills: from design, drawing and painting to printmaking, sewing and embroidery. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois and a MS in Advertising from Northwestern University. Karen has exhibited in national juried shows.
Below the Surface asks what we see when we look deeper. It reminds us to examine things more closely and consider the wider implications. The artists in this exhibition look beyond the external to explore topics ranging from the environment and science to emotion, humanity and current issues. In The Clandestine Meeting shadowy figures seen through a window mirror distrust in today’s society, while the fading blooms in Struggle challenge us to consider our definition of beauty.
The art in Below the Surface reflects our current point in history; a point which requires us to look beyond the superficial to consider the effect of words and actions, foresee consequences, find deeper meaning and even forge a path for hope.
