Unit 3: Visual Design Activity (SAQA Seminar 2022)

Return to SAQA Seminar Unit 3

Dust off your portfolio. In this two-part activity, you get a chance to review your own work.

Design Activity #1 for Friday, February 25 Live Chat

Look through your body of work:

  • What elements of design really characterize your work?

  • What principles of design are recurring themes in your work?

  • Do you have a consistent color palette?

Need guidance, check out Design Concepts with Valerie Goodwin. Select the gallery images to see details of the design concept or principle.

Browse SAQA's collection to see examples of other SAQA artists' work.

Design Activity #2 for Friday, March 4 Live Chat

Select one or two of your best pieces and one or two with which you’re not especially pleased.

  • What did you do well?

  • What could have been done better?

  • If you were to do it again, what would you do differently?

Try using one of the critique checklists or questions from the resources.

Need more confidence in giving or getting critiques?

  • SAQA offers even more critique videos and resources in the Member Resource Library ,  including You be the Critic! videos.
  • Consider joining a critique group.  Maybe your regional SAQA group already has one, or you could start one.
  • Join SAQA-Artique; it is open to all SAQA members. Members trust in each other to make honest comments about the issues that they wish to have critiqued. The critiques are all in the spirit of a shared interest in quilting as an art form and improvement of each person's talents.  Become a part of the SAQA-Artique Facebook Group.
  • Need a Mentor?  The SAQA Mentorship Program is another place to get feedback on your work.

Continue the fun - post examples of artwork showcasing an Element or Principle.
Please post comments and the results of the activities on the SAQA Seminar Facebook Group or via our SAQA Seminar Submission Form.
