Powerful storms are inherently fascinating for their force, movement, and colors. They may be literal like thunderstorms, ice storms, blizzards, or hurricanes. The very force of storms implies their opposite, such as eye of the storm, or the calm before the storm, because a storm usually can’t last forever. Storms are about change, either destructive or corrective. Or storms might be metaphors or analogies for something else, like human emotional storms. This link between the power of nature and human behavior is an old one. Ancient Greece, for example, anthropomorphized the power of the thunderstorm into Zeus, and ancient Egypt had its animal-headed storm god, Seth. How will you apply this theme to your life?

Because this is a virtual exhibition, it is critical that submitted images be of the best possible quality: in focus, with clear details, and following SAQA's digital image requirements. Common image errors include:
- Images that are out of focus or too small,
- Cropping images too closely on the full-view image. All edges of the artwork must be visible along with a small amount of contrasting background.
- Distracting elements in the image background - we don't want to see design walls, rugs, your studio, hanging clips, hands, pins, etc.

After a long career teaching art history and administering instructional technology at California State University at Northridge, San Jose, and Oakland University in Michigan, Catheryn Cheal retired and had time to have fun. She had sewn traditional quilts from patterns since the 1970s and knew fiber artists from teaching, but was especially inspired by the non-geometric freedom of shapes, bright contrasting colors, and the creativity of modern and pictorial quilts that she first saw in the 2010s. She began creating her own designs for wall quilts, joined guilds, learned techniques, put on exhibits, gave a few presentations, organized groups, and entered shows. She continues to build her own collection of quilts inspired by her land, life experiences, new techniques, guild challenges, and SAQA calls for entry.
