It all began with a mural in the Shaw section of Washington, DC. I captured an image of this one detail: a thumb. Such a simple image, superimposed on the rich, textured background of an actual building. Street art. Now that the image has been removed from its original context and repurposed as a layered form, with lines of stitching, its meaning has changed. It’s no longer part of a body’s image---it’s a protest about the lack of DC statehood and the thumb of Congress. Street art.
