One way Europeans shop is in small local markets, often buying for the day and shopping several days each week. I wonder if the street markets will survive with the rise of two-worker families. Many of the customers at small shops and neighborhood markets are older. Clearly, the small market often functions as more than just a place to shop. A Matter of Scale portrays the historic fish market (vismarkt) in Brugge, Belgium, where locals to this day go to buy seafood.
