Heart of Darkness was created in September of 1998, long before the tragic events at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Uvalde, and elsewhere throughout the world. After many widely discussed incidents of gun violence, I started thinking of the multitude of unpublicized acts of violence which occur in our society daily. My response was to put my thoughts to fabric and thread. I incorporated photo transfers of handguns from magazines, tiny toy guns stitched with silk ribbon, sighting targets, and more, all depicting the proliferation of violence and its tools.
