Textile Talks: Muscogee Journey: An Exploration of Identity, Belonging, Home and Heritage – Melinda Schwakhofer

Conversations with the Artists

Join Melinda Schwakhofer on her Muscogee Journey, the story of how Schwakhofer has used art quilts and textile art to map her re-connection with her Native American roots.

Schwakhofer began this body of work in 2008 to process and articulate not only her personal story and exploration of challenging family roots, but also how her personal experiences relate to the wider story of her Muscogee ancestry.

She reveals a tangled web of inherited trauma and unresolved grief which has been handed down through the generations and which is keenly felt in her own family.

The fascinating and thought-provoking work includes motifs relevant both to contemporary culture of the Southeastern USA and the much older, ancient Mississippian culture that preceded it.

While this artwork tells of painful stories, (The Trail of Tears, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women), it also explores themes that are common to all people: Identity, Belonging, Home and Heritage.
