Textile Talks: Building Community Through Quilts with Maria Shell

Conversations with the Artists

In 2014, Maria Shell was an artist-in-residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, she worked weekly with a formerly chronically homeless community now living in Moore Place. She developed a relationship with the Moore Place residents by teaching them basic sewing skills. This led to making a community quilt that celebrated the residents and their journey toward finding a home and a community. Since then, Maria has collaborated with communities and organizations across the US, helping them build quilts and share their stories.
