Seeking the Light
An exhibition of artwork by Alexandra Kingswell
Leicester Cathedral, UK
25th July to 25th August, 2025
Free admission
Leicester Cathedral may be the fifth smallest cathedral in the Church of England, but, during August this year, Alexandra Kingswell will be filling the south aisle with her vibrantly coloured quilts. Her aim is to give viewers a joyful and arresting visual experience, to inspire deep contemplation, to lift spirits, and to make people smile. (And maybe also to intrigue them a little!)
If you are able to visit, as well as seeing Alex’s work, you will see the beautiful and unusual stained glass by Thomas Denny. And, of course, Richard III’s tomb.
Alex says, "I use strong, bold colours and put them into relationship with each other to see what happens - to see how they affect each other. In my work, I’m constantly searching for that patch of luminosity, looking at ways to create or imply the light in a piece. I think it is an expression of the deep hope inside me. The hope and the joy bubble up when I’m working with my colours."
Her work travels widely. Three of her pieces have been purchased by the International Quilt Museum in Nebraska for their permanent Contemporary Textile Art Collection.
