The Mourning Project: Little Elegies

Non-SAQA
Exhibition

This huge community art project is a collection of 20,000 pairs of handmade baby booties. Makers seek to honor each American baby lost before their first birthday each year, draw attention to the problem of infant mortality in the U.S., and begin a discussion of how to save little lives. Each installation is site-specific and emphasizes local issues, accomplishments, and priorities. Booties are sewn, knit, crocheted, and felted and include wearable booties, Mary Janes, sneakers, fanciful sling-backs, and flip-flops. As one maker put it, "My love is in every stitch."
