By embracing upcycled clothing as her primary medium, Leah Cooke invites viewers to reflect on the stories embedded in the fabric of their lives. Her quilts are a reminder that beauty can emerge from the overlooked and discarded. Her process is intuitive. Leah uses fabric as her palette, rather than paint. Working from a sketch, the work evolves on the wall, like working on a canvas, but with thread and woven material. Her themes are straightforward and figurative: nature, identity, and the passing of time. In her hands, these clothes, remnants of everyday life, are deconstructed and reconstructed, their fibers interwoven to create art that transcends its origins.
