The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art is hosting a solo exhibit by Iowa City artist Astrid Hilger Bennett. Hilger Bennett has spent a lifetime creating fiber art. Trained as a printmaker, her interest in fiber art and “making things” began in childhood and grew into her passion for creating and fostering creativity in herself and others. With a deep interest in surface and the act of mark-making on cloth, Bennett uses only hand painted, screen printed and monoprinted fabrics in her work, occasionally adding ink into the mix with drawing from the natural world, with either chemical or natural dyes. On view are art quilts, scrolls, tarps, sketchbooks and even a weaving from the 1980s. Hilger Bennett was featured this year in the SAQA Journal, with her article, Natural Dye Home Art Residency.
