Theme

Artists find inspiration in other artists’ work. They may be inspired by technique, unique representation of an aspect of the artwork, the aesthetic of the artist's body of work, color play, or juxtaposition/representation of images in the artwork. Some examples may include the color and visual impact of Georgia O’Keeffe, the kinetic energy of Dale Chihuly’s glass art, the fantasy images of Michael Parkes, MaryAnne Mercer’s botanical photographs in black and white, the flow of movement captured by Malcolm Macdonald’s sculpture, John Maxon’s use of dynamic color in paintings, or the lines and shapes of Tiffany’s art deco jewelry designs. Although these represent broad artist communities, many sources such as music, dance, nature, or architecture inspire our artistic muse to create.

Artists are invited to submit their unique interpretation of another artist’s work. When developing the piece, select an artist who evokes an impact or significant emotion within you. This piece is not meant to be a replica of the artist’s work. Use an element of their work, technique, or overall impact of the piece to guide your design process. Most importantly, make the work your own. The information described here should not constitute the boundaries of this theme, but rather serve as a starting point to create and show your voice as an artist.
