Artist Statement
The act of "making marks" in typography or gesture drawing is a catalyst that inspires novel contours in my art. I work with a limited color palette that references this influence and reinforces the graphic, dynamic nature of my compositions. They evoke energy, movement, vitality.
Working exclusively by hand gives me an intimate connection with the process as it evolves. I draw from my illustration and graphic design background to construct a piece as if laying out a printed page to direct the viewer’s gaze across the surface. Contours are composed of found scraps, hints of other projects, and repurposed fabrics. Lines connect forms. Points and corners contrast with curves and arches. There is a tension between light and dark; a balance between open spaces and improvised silhouettes. Quilting adds a second layer of complexity meant to enhance the design with texture and dimension.
Ideally, the composition will catch the viewer’s attention & the surface texture will invite a closer look.
