This piece is from a series of portraits contemplating encounters with birds as individuals (rather than as instances of their species), and the experience of both familiarity and mystery that arises in their presence. The image is created by surface weaving, an original technique that generates myriad colour interactions. When viewed at close range, the realistic image dissolves into countless micro-abstractions. These visual effects evoke a sense of the shifting light, complexity, and liveliness that one can experience in nature.
Primarily wool, silk, and cotton threads and textiles, with smaller amounts of both natural and synthetic mixed fibres
Surface weaving, including free motion quilting
