I'd been a painter and an illustrator for many years before creating "Spontaneous Combustion," my first exploration of the art quilt form. Its creation was a direct response to my mothering experience, the need for an artistic medium that could be manipulated while raising small children and my drive to understand the previous generations of women who had made the domestic linens I incorporated in the work. This piece brought me closer to my relationship with the handmade and was the catalyst for the women-centered work I continue to explore.
