Lapham's large-scale contemporary quilts exemplify her love of cartography, science, erector sets and Dr. Seuss. Named for an historic amusement park in Rye NY, Lapham's Playland series includes a variety of color palettes ranging from nearly monochromatic to bold primary colors. These large works portray a combination of eclectic architecture, complex machinery, and outlandish arrangements that push the limits of balance, proportion and symmetry. Thin lines provide pathways that connect figures in a maze-like game. Playland #1's overall exuberant mood has a childlike quality that evokes the energy of a theme park and the sense of excitement of the crowd.
