Pixels

We use AI for advanced analysis of microscope images in our research lab. The ability of the machine learning algorithms to decipher which patterns of only subtly different pixels mean vessels vs. neurons vs. glial cells, or to segment images and identify the brain pathologies that contribute to cognitive decline, becomes more impressive with each program iteration. Our ability to analyze large amounts of data and increase statistical power has improved dramatically with AI algorithms: when each image doesn’t need manual analysis, so many more can be analyzed. Yet the rigorous scientist always goes back to check, validate, and lay human eyes on the pictures.
