Having lived in Hawaii for 37 years, I’ve experienced a number of hurricanes. The usual gentle, welcoming breeze that brings moisture and coolness to the islands can suddenly turn violent, causing a great deal of damage and destruction. In preparation for such storms, everyone hunkers down: taping windows, filling bathtubs with water, and checking emergency supplies. In our house, the room with the most interior walls and least glass has been designated the safest. There we camp out for the night, listening to the storm and waiting for it to pass.
