My latest work Skin Deep/Miami Cross Currents parallels the fabric layers to the many hidden layers of a person's life or environment and the stitching to the many influences and choices we make that can change our initial objective. This work tries to show their overall relationship to each other and the world around us. How we and our atmosphere are all sometimes "hanging by a thread". This work is designed to hang away from the wall so that the fluctuation of wind and air can alter the movement of the individual squares while projecting shadows on the wall. The reflective shadows represent the influence of individuals to the world around us.
Materials
Hand dyed and commercial fabric, acrylic paint, rayon threads. Lucite hanging wall bar.
Techniques
Each mini quilt was created individually and stitched together showing the flowing currents of the ocean. I've used fusing, painting freehand machine embroidery. I created a lucite hanging system that holds the work away from the wall for movement.
