Mad Bee

Mad Bee is part of a series of quilts called American Childhood. All start with mid-century baby blankets created by anonymous hands. The originals were embroidered with cute little anthropomorphized animals over which I hand-embroidered and painted angry animals. I feel the contrast between the sweet cartoons and wild animals shows us a different focus on the dangers faced by wildlife the world over. Of course, this sense of animal anger is a form of anthropomorphism on my part, but I feel it’s not a stretch to think animals would be angry with the way we are treating the world. My hope is that this message helps us look at the wild world in new and more supportive ways.
