Our source of blue for centuries, indigo, is found in several varied plant genera in different parts of the globe. Isatis on the left is European woad, while Strobilanthes curia hails from Asia. The Mediterranean Sea gave us the murex sea snail, a source of ancient Tyrian purple. This animal dye oddly has a similar chemistry and nearly identical molecule to the indigo plants.
