12 in(30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm)
I challenged myself to make beauty and meaning from a random segment of a vintage fan quilt and have made a sculptural object to honor the original object and its maker. I started with the quilt’s 1930s fabrics that were deteriorating from light and regular use, adding fabric I created by printing my photograph of these older pieces onto cotton. I used traditional quilter’s techniques of hand appliqué and hand piecing to construct this three-dimensional object. As reimagined, redesigned, and repurposed, what has been created is no longer a functional bedcover. Instead, it is an oversized child’s block toy: play with it!
