The Australian continent is the lowest, flattest, and oldest landmass on earth. Once past the verdant coastal rim, the land receives so little rain it is effectively desert. Two hundred years ago, when Europeans first explored the Outback, they found it inhospitable despite indigenous Australians having survived such environments for approximately 50,000 years. The land called the “Red Heart” is valued now as an iconic tourist destination.
