The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA), founded in May 2016, seeks to build the next generation of social activists by emphasizing the possibility of art bringing about personal and social change. Sewing intertwined with social awareness not only provides students with a unique creative outlet, but also creates a safe space for them to make decisions about their community, and voice the issues that they feel negatively impact their culture. Students of SJSA explore, discuss, and express modes of oppression, lived experiences, and creativity. All of which culminates in the production of either individual social justice art quilts or patterned blocks, eventually sewn together to make collective quilts.
