Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Miki Rodriguez knows heat and understands what it means to live in a borderland. Now at home in San Antonio, her work channels cultural symbols of heat and borders, both literal and figurative. Drawing on “a variety of discarded materials, intense colors and designs” that reflect her experiences, she creates layered abstractions to document changes in the physical environment, in the energy of social movements, and in specific events or people. As an artist, she is a witness to social and environmental phenomena, and these artworks are her testimony.
