Jo-Ann Morgan writes, "This series of artwork, which I call 'News from the Front' and 'Noticias de la Frontera,' pays tribute to mothers and children, bringing attention to tragedies that result from war and social conflicts. Wherever the battle lines, whether refugees from droughts and foreign wars, or migrants at the US Southern border, one thing they share is grieving women whose lives are upended. The news from these frontlines is not about the heroics of war, nor political intrigue. Instead, there is a similarity in the shared grief among survivors.
Using machine quilting with applique I construct compositions in layered cotton fabric. The medium resembles quilted comforters, making it familiar and approachable. As such, I find it ideal for addressing provocative topics."
