A “lens” is a physical object used to make distant objects appear closer and a metaphor for how we see the world. As a cell and molecular biologist, Kathy Suprenant brings a different perspective to her craft. Her artwork often appears magnified and somewhat distorted, as if viewed through an imaginary lens. Depending upon how you make sense of the world, each piece may appear as a celestial object, underwater seascape, microscopic organism or graphic abstraction.
In this exhibit, science and art are intertwined in various textiles designed by the artist. In Cell-evision, a large-scale woodcarving was printed directly onto silk velvet. In the ongoing Through a Lens series, sun prints were made on cotton fabric with acrylic paint and found objects as stencils. Individual sun prints were photographed, digitally manipulated and recombined in various ways into a unique image custom printed onto satin. Texture and dimension were added with a variety of hand and machine stitching.
