THEME/CONCEPT
Quilting is steeped in tradition through the use of techniques, blocks, shapes, and materials. Each time we approach a project, we pull on our individual and collective knowledge of the art form to create a new and unique piece of art. For this exhibit, we ask our artists to joyfully explore the concept of derivative work by seeking inspiration from a traditional aspect of quilting and translating it into a contemporary form. This may include, but is not limited to, incorporating traditional quilt blocks or patchwork, exploring and expanding on traditional techniques, or using materials in a way that honors the quilters who came before us. Through developing this work, artists are encouraged to explore how tradition blends with personal design style and current quilting trends by honoring the past, embracing the present moment in contemporary quilting, and remaining open to the future of the art form.
