Join us on Wednesday, August 5th at 2PM EDT to delve beyond the surface with two SDA member artists: Meli Bandera and Janine Brown.
As SDA’s Inaugural Artist in Residence, Meli Bandera is a Chicana multi-disciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in the Midwest. Their work focuses on the interaction of ancestral fiber techniques and contemporary practices, such as Chicano Tattoo traditions, to investigate cultural shifts and the effect migration and place contribute to a cultural identity.
Janine Brown is a Connecticut-based multidisciplinary artist whose work interrogates the domestic sphere through materials and methods drawn from home economics. Using kitchen chemistry, Janine creates all-natural bioplastic composites that substitute for fabric. As she cooks, sews, and engages in traditional craft, she examines societal stereotypes concerning women and the home.
We’ll get a behind the scenes look at both artists’ practices - their motivations, studio setups, and the work they choose to make as they sustain their creative lives.
Textile Talks features weekly presentations and panel discussions from the International Quilt Museum, Quilt Alliance, Studio Art Quilt Associates, and Surface Design Association. The programs are held online at 2 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Pacific) each Wednesday.
