Artist Statement
I find myself drawn to the archetype of The Rebel. Whether in the form of artists, writers or other thought leaders, I admire those who dare to push back against unhealthy social norms.
As a longtime music radio host, there is a direct connection between the dual identities I hold as a DJ and an artist. What satisfies me about these roles is my ability to both literally and figuratively amplify voices. My portraiture is based on a deep respect for my subjects, and a desire to share their stories.
My art is made from cloth and thread: tactile materials for a digital age. I create within the quilting tradition, yet my work is nearly unrecognizable from a traditional quilt. I'm emboldened by the generations of women who have worked in this medium before me, and whose work was dismissed as craft. I consider my art to be rooted in feminist, anti-patriarchal, and anti-capitalist values.
