Wonderful Whirled of Butterflies and Bees

Wonderful Whirled of Butterflies and Bees is composed of a six-sided spiral, suggesting the structure of a flower, and the journey of these insects from one stage to another. The piece was inspired by the garden my husband and I created during the pandemic to support native plants and pollinators, as well as to help us be outdoors during the shutdown. We tracked monarchs and other insects and captured many photographs. The improvisationally pieced stripes suggest the caterpillar stage of the monarch butterfly. The empty circles symbolize the reduction in the populations of these vital pollinators and the threat to their habitat.
