I firmly believe that harnessing personal passions increases artistic power. This quilt is part of a series which was born after attending a family event in the east Texas Piney Woods - a lush verdant land with softly rounded hills, many rivers and creeks, and thick forests. As we turned the car toward the west, I happily exclaimed, :Ahhh, west toward home". Thus was this series born! In it, I utilize an assortment of much loved symbols of my homeland - a sort of artistic vocabulary employed to express the passion I have for this place. As usual, the universality of the silhouette form is employed. I really love the expansive feeling I get when drinking that first cup of coffee and at the same time, experiencing the glorious heavens early on a cold morning. I admire the creatures that manage to make a living in our starkly beautiful and rugged landscape.
Materials
Materials used in my quilts are fabric (commercial and hand painted), resists, fiber reactive liquid dyes, cotton/poly batting and thread
Techniques
Techniques employed include the use of paper and pencil to draw the design on heavy paper, which is the same size as the projected quilt. Using that drawing, I then hand cut tracing paper templates to cut the shapes from the cloth. I hand painted some of the cloth using liquid dyes, resist. and brushes. That fabric was then steamed to set the dyes. I machine pieced and stitched - as well as hand stitched on the appliques.
