The Old Man of the Mountain is a familiar symbol of NH. Located in Franconia Notch State Park, the beloved icon was a natural rock formation resulting from a series of geologic happenings, and was comprised of five separate granite ledges arranged horizontally to form the man's profile. The profile measured about 40 feet tall by 25 feet wide. Tragically, on May 3, 2003, it collapsed.
I lived in NH for twelve years, and during that time made several family trips north to view the Old Man.
Coupled with my love of creating pictorial quilts and my desire to pay tribute to the Old Man, I felt compelled to do this quilt.
