Aboriginal Australians have used fire as an important tool to manage the natural environment for thousands of years. Fire helps the germination of seeds and encourages new grass growth for the native wildlife hunted by Aboriginal people. Spinifex is a spiky, hardy grass which grows across a great band of the Australian Outback and is one of the species to benefit from this indigenous practice.
