Bloody Butcher heirloom maize was developed in Virginia during the 1840s, when many farms were using slave and servant labor. The savage name for this strain of maize seems to attest to the brutal environment of many of these forgotten laborers. I wish to thank retired botanist David G. Fisher for permitting me to use his photograph of red maize grown in his Midwest garden.
