This quilt was made for an improvisational challenge, with one challenge to use improvisational letters. I remembered a phrase that was bantered around the art room in my 9th grade art class. The teacher was Mr. Gallagher and I’m not sure if he came up with the phrase, or if it was a student and we all just adopted it. “What Color is Your Orange Neighbor” was thrown into conversations randomly. I was never sure what it meant, but to me the meaning was “isn’t this a conundrum” or “life is absurd.” It’s stuck with me all these years and I remember fondly his class which delved into serious art techniques. Plus he was a young and handsome teacher!
