New Zealand: Pukeko

First rule of travel: always explore the local flora and fauna. However, New Zealand birds can be rather elusive. Those few that cooperated did so only from a great distance. Finally the grand Pukeko (Maori for the "abundant and widespread" purple mud hen) has revealed itself, racing back and forth in a field beside the road! It has brought me great joy and warm memories of sunny days in NZ!
Materials
Hand painted and printed cotton fabric, intuitively pieced, layered with silk organza. Birds created with collaged tissue paper and matte medium. Machine pieced and quilted with hand embroidery.
