American Association of Woodturners artist
In an attempt to create a piece that confounded woodturning’s typical symmetry, I experimented with multi-axis turning to sculpt a dynamic, asymmetric, curved spindle. Multi-axis turning poses many challenges, however, and turning the candle cup was no exception. Turning the wood along an axis primarily composed of air put great strain on the wood and brought it to the verge of snapping—which occurred on my first attempts. The result is a pair of functional, identical sculptures that invite the viewer to explore them from every angle, engaging both visually and tactilely. The flowing lines contrast the prismatic base and the warm tones of the mahogany.
