In ‘Death and Transfiguration’ I dealt with the recent death of my own mother through the imagery of the amazingly colored, aptly named rainbow lorikeet. This bird became a personal symbol for the multi-faceted richness my mother’s influence bestowed on my daily life. The loss of mother, friend, and protector is seen in the top bird as the she glances over her shoulder in a last moment of saying goodbye – forever. In creating this work, I was able to come to terms with the loss of my mother and move through the pain of loss, until it became a positive force feeding into my daily existence.
