Dr. Miklos Szego was my husband's grandfather. Miklos was a wealthy farmer, lawyer, and a Jewish Council Leader in Budapest. He enabled many Jews to escape the Nazis, including his sons and wife, before he was killed.
One of the last was a young girl named Marika Chana, who played a pioneering role in the new State of Israel, today a country of modern cities with high levels of income, education, and culture. Home to many Jewish refugees, Israel generated a new homeless people - Palestinians. A fragile peace exists, but there is substantial conflict and poverty in neighboring areas. People still have not learned to treat each other with humanity and respect.
