I felt that ‘Avast’ being a nautical term meaning stop or desist, was an appropriate title to use when it came to how I felt about the practice of Whaling. Avast’s inspiration was found in images that I had taken of old whaling boats in Iceland. As in all my work the piece is abstract but the shapes echo the shapes found within the wooden boats. Surfaces and textures hint at barnacles and the sea, whilst the tangled cords suggest the capture of the whale.
