My first section hike on the Appalachian Trail was an unforgettable adventure that included spending multiple days walking and nights sleeping in the woods with everything I needed for survival in my backpack. Memories of tree roots and rocks, walking through rain showers, and encountering shelter mice are fun in retrospect, but what I took from the experience was an even greater appreciation of the natural world. Trees are very special to me, representing strength and the passage of time. My first sighting of trillium was the icing on the cake.
