Improv paper piecing: Isn’t that an oxymoron? Amy will start off this five-day workshop by explaining the design process that she developed and named improv paper piecing. In short, improv paper piecing involves designing paper pieced templates with an improvisational approach and repeating the resulting block in a block based, modern, quilt top layout. Students will be invited to join in a series of exercises where they will sketch original improv paper pieced blocks that are block based, shape based, and object based (the three sections from Amy’s Improvisational Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Designs book.) They will learn to section and number their paper pieced templates and how to sew the blocks with Amy’s FPP tips and tricks. Following a series of layout discussions, they will select a block to use for their quilt top layout. We will discuss using color placement, deconstruction, alternate gridwork, and negative space to create bold, modern layouts. Quilt math will be used to estimate yardage. And students will sew their modern quilt tops!
