Margaret Blank - Order Out of Chaos (or Chaos Can Be Colourful)

Traditional fibre arts and textiles at home began out of necessity and resourcefulness. There is abundant and complex research available on the relationship of women with craft: about craft as a message carrier, a keeper of cultural knowledge and traditions, a comforter, and a conduit of ingenuity that has shaped home lives, wardrobes, and politics the world over.

Practitioners of textiles and fibre arts were mostly women - they were connected to the working and use of fibres - and the crafts associated with them still sometimes conjure ideas of female domesticity. Things might be made in fits and starts, done in spare time or in time intended for rest – often while talking to others or caring for children and aspects of home-keeping.

This exhibition presents the work of 11 artists who saw how their handcrafted pieces and experience as craftspeople relates to the theme; they offer examples of work in a variety of media.

The Viewpoint Gallery showcases original works of art by individual artists and collectives, and curated exhibitions. The gallery is in the lobby of the City of Red Deer Culture Services facility, located at 5205 - 48 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
