"Shame" is 3rd in my series of 7 Modern Sins. While developing this piece I learned that my response to shame--hiding my face--is an archetypal response seen among children and adults of many cultures. The cutouts (19) include organza pouches that are attached at their corners. They are filled with tangled strips of fabric (like tea in teabags) representing internal tangles of self-esteem and identity. When backlit, light shines through the cutouts and tangles, and the figure glows a soft red. The piece was created using hand and machine piecing, raw edge appliqué, fusion, and machine quilting. The square cutouts and outer edges were faced.
