Scorched Earth was created in response to the 2020 California wildfires that burned approximately 4.2 million acres, devastating forests, homes, and many lives. The air quality was extremely poor for weeks. And we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Being outdoors, my solace through shelter-in-place, was impossible during those weeks of California on fire. There were many reasons for the fire—climate change, drought, human errors, human encroaching on natural landscapes, and our inattention to the needs of the forest. Each panel has a complexity and depth reflecting that disturbing time. The process of botanical printing is never predictable.
